When it comes to the Kardashian-Jenner family, everyone has at least one sister they relate to or gravitate toward the most. For me, that sister is Kendall Jenner. In the 11 years I've kept up with the Kardashians, I (and millions of others) have watched her grow into a world-renowned supermodel, clothing designer, and brand ambassador (she's served as the face of companies such as EsteГ© Lauder, Longchamp, Calvin Klein, and most recently-and perhaps a bit controversially-Proactiv). Conceptually, these partnerships made sense: Jenner, a fashion model and person with acne walks the walk and talks the talk. Her latest venture, however, isn't one we saw coming: She and dental care brand, Moon co-created an on-the-go teeth-whitening pen. It's an interesting contract to ink, to be sure, but lest we forget, the Kardashian-Jenners are a family who hustle.
Recently, I got the opportunity to chat with the multi-hyphenate about the launch. On the day of the interview, I flossed more than I would before a dentist appointment. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but given the topic du jour, it felt appropriate. And it's a good thing I did-when I arrived at the Beverly Hills mansion where we'd meet, I signed a waiver to be filmed on KUWK, which I happily obliged, smile in tow.
Upstairs, Jenner sat cross-legged in yellow, Python embossed Paris Texas knee-high boots with orange pants tucked into them and a white ribbed mock turtleneck. Somehow, she was both effortlessly cool and perfectly put together. We chatted about Moon, which is an oral care line that Kendall describes as, "So cool, you'd want to have it on your shelf or on your counter." After seeing the products first-hand, I agreed: Picture matte-black packaging with clean white text, a departure from clinical, stark-white containers of floss and tubes of toothpaste. "Shaun Neff and I have spoken about this a lot," she explains. Ed. note: Neff is the founder of Moon. "When people are coming over, you hide it. But Moon looks nice, works, and is good for you."
In addition to the teeth-whitening pen that Jenner co-created, Moon features a charcoal toothpaste that foams gray and doesn't turn your sink black like other iterations. And as it turns out, this is a requisite of both mine and Jenner's (messiness is one of her biggest pet peeves). In addition to her "clean freak" nature, we also discuss the one product she uses everyday, a beauty lesson she wishes she learned sooner, and her favorite people to follow on Instagram, below.
Why did you decide to co-create a teeth-whitening pen and what makes it different from other versions out there?
"I'm kind of a person who's traveling a lot and always on the go and running around all the time, and pictures, and the whole thing. So it's something that I thought was easy to just throw in your bag and throw it on-and it actually really works and brightens your smile a bit. It made a lot of sense for me."
Is there a new type of product you “discovered” this year that you love?
"I like jade rollers, I think they're cool."
Is there anyone whose beauty/skincare routineВ inspires you?
"There are people that I probably look at and would be like, 'Oh my God, their skin is flawless.' But at the same time, everyone's skin is very particular. And things that might work for one person probably work differently for another person. So for me, I take pride in my skincare routine and how I've locked it down and gotten to a really good place. I like my own skincare routine."
Favorite people to follow on Instagram?В
"My friends. I love seeing what my friends are doing and what they're up to."
How do you deal with pressures on body image and beauty expectations?
"In today's world and also being a model who's supposed to, for lack of better words, be a specific way on a cover, or whatever everyone expects you to be, it's taught me a lot about not trying to follow those standards and be my own person. We all have the things that we struggle with, whether it be body, mind, or soul. And I think that kind of ignoring what you're supposed to be and everyone's idea of perfect and being your own version of perfect is all you could ever ask for and all you ever should strive to be."
What's one thing about you that might surprise people/people get wrong about you?
"There are tons of things people get wrong about me, but something that might surprise people is I'm low-key a control freak. I let my friends use my stuff, cook, do whatever you've got to do, but I'm right behind you cleaning.В I'm literally putting everything away and they're like, 'Kendall I needed that again.' and I'm like, 'Okay, go grab it, I'm sorry! laughs I just can't help myself."
What's one beauty lesson you wish you learned sooner?
"I was lucky enough to have a lot of older sisters who guided my little sister and me, but I think that the one thing that they didn't struggle with on the same level that I did was acne. I wish I would have known sooner-I mean, I guess it's all a learning experience-but maybe not to overdo it with products and like, go crazy. I remember when I was younger and I first started breaking out, I literally couldn't stop-I'd go to stores, pharmacies, whatever and just get everything and just try it all. I think that was like a huge mistake. Again, I was really young and I didn't know what to do. I had to figure out my own path with the breakouts because I don't think any of my sisters really broke out like I did."
Are there any skincare and beauty products you use everyday?В
"I use Proactiv every day, morning and night. And then, I think just staying hydrated and drinking tons of water. I try and drink so much water."
Up next, Jenner's tip for being more photogenic.
