If you're a soon-to-be bride who hasn't turned to Pinterest to plan your wedding, with all due respect, you're missing out. Our friends at the major inspo-serving website tell us there are overВ four billion (yes, with a B) differentВ piecesВ of wedding content for you to sift through, soВ it might be worth checking out.В
Pinterest's 2018 trend report found that most usersВ are opting forВ less opulent, extravagant affairs and are paring down their special days-couples are forgoing arches and letting nature serve as their backdrop; nixing large, ornate cakes for smaller, minimal designs; andВ many are even opting to skip a formal wedding altogetherВ (searches forВ courthouse weddings are up 129%). In the beauty realm, wedding-day looks are following this same carefree, low-maintenance theme: The most-searched hairstyle is "messy updo," with searches up 1247% year over year. We're seeing the same look mirrored on the red carpet-gone are the days of perfectly structured "prom hair" as we make a large shift into undone, piece-y, pinned-back styles. (Plus, if the weather isn't cooperating, it'll only add to the look's whimsy.) Take a look at some of our favorite celebrity-inspired messy updos below.
This loose, wavy low bun on Jessica Alba is one of the first to pop up when you search messy updos on Pinterest. It's slightly parted in the middle with small sections pinned back on either side for a modern Victorian-era vibe.ВGetty Images
This simple messy bun is proof that you can wear a casual 'do and still look polished. By keeping the sides sleek and pulling out a few pieces around the crown (and two parted tendrils at the very top of the hairline), an otherwise errand-running style is made wedding-ready.В
For shorter hair, you can do an abridged version of the first style and tightly roll the bottom half with several bobby pins to keep the style in place.Getty Images
Katie Holmes's loose bun is pulled taut on the sides, but the top of the crown is left loose and piece-y for more volume. Try spritzing some VerbВ Sea Texture SprayВ on the roots to encourage lift.В ВGetty Images
RiRi's gathered updo is surrounded by embellished barrettes along the perimeter, a more modern and chicer replacement forВ a bridal tiara or comb. Try these stunningВ glitzy clipsВ for your own look.ВGetty Images
Emily Blunt's low knotted style was fastened together with thin silver wire by hairstylistВ Laini Reeves. There was no specific rhyme or reason to the weave-it was tighter and more gathered in some areas and more spread out in others. We love the abstract nature of the look.Getty Images
Perfect for the boho bride, Vanessa Hudgens's pancaked crown braid (for reference, "pancaking" is when you pull apart the braid to make it wider and flatter) is in part what outdoor garden wedding dreams are made of. Loosely curled pieces pulled out near the temple perfectly de-structures the look even further.Getty Images
Everything about Jourdan Dunn's look from her romantic low updo to her ombre red lip has us completely swooning. Part hair in the middle, gather low at the nape of the neck, and then loosely curl the front pieces with a wide-barrel curling iron like this offering from Pro Tools.Getty IMages
Don't fret about bobby pins popping out on your wedding day-embrace them! Margot Robbie's low knotted style is flanked with visible bobby pins to accessorize and secure the style, andВ two silver bun cuffs placed on top of each other in opposing directions finish off the metallic-studded 'do.Getty Images
We're getting Audrey Hepburn vibes from thisВ French twist on Alexa Chung. It's also an ideal style forВ brides with bangs. Try OuaiВ Matte PomadeВ to give your own fringe some grit.
